  • People with gum disease are twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those with healthy gums

Emergency Treatment

If you have pain or urgent treatment needs, phone the surgery and we will try to book you in as soon as possible. If the surgery is closed when you call and you are suffering from severe pain, hang up and dial 111 for the NHS emergency out of hour’s service. Calls to this number are free. If you need to contact the emergency services, you will be assessed as to urgency and will be advised of appropriate options. This could be advice on self-medication, attendance to the A&E or treatment at a Dental Access Centre, GDP, Bristol Dental Hospital or an out of hours treatment centre in Bath or Bristol.

Mind The Gap

It can be quite distressing to have to have a tooth removed, especially when it is a front tooth – nobody likes having a gap! However, all is not lost – there are several options for replacing the tooth and restoring your smile.

Partial denture

A partial denture is a small plate made from either acrylic or acrylic and chrome, which has the missing tooth or teeth attached to it. It may have clasps to help keep it in place, but these are usually very discreet. They can take some getting used to as they may cover your palate which can make talking and eating feel very strange to begin with but you will quickly get used to it.

Bridge

A bridge is the main alternative to a partial denture. There are two types of bridge – fixed and adhesive. A fixed bridge is made by putting a crown on the adjacent tooth or teeth, which carries a false tooth to replace the missing one. An adhesive bridge is a false tooth which has ‘wings’, which are bonded to the tooth or teeth either side with a special cement. Which bridge is the best for you depends on the condition of the teeth adjacent to the missing one.

Implants

An implant is a Titanium screw that can replace the root of a tooth when a tooth is lost. It is screwed into the jawbone and then a crown is placed on the top leaving it looking just like your natural tooth. Suitability for implants depends on the condition of the supporting bone in your jaw, although if there is not enough, or it isn’t healthy enough, it may need some artificial bone grafting to it first.

Staff Leavers

We were very sad to say goodbye to two of our team members last month. Kath, one of our receptionists, has finally decided to retire after almost 30 years at the practice but deserves a well-earned rest! Camilla has decided to take time out of dental nursing for a few years to concentrate on her family but will probably come back eventually! They will both be very much missed.

Staff Arrivals

We are very pleased to welcome our newest team member, Lyndsay, who is a qualified dental nurse and has returned to work after raising her family. She will be a great asset to our team.
